Join Alice Mayye and Prof Christopher Paul Szabo as they share their experiences of navigating the dynamics between doctors and patients.
At one time or another almost every person will be involved in a doctor-patient, patient-doctor experience. After collaborating on other projects, Alice and Prof were helped to realise their own lived experiences might offer insights into experiences often felt but not articulated by both patients and medical practitioners. And, when words have not been adequate Alice has used her camera lens and literature to help tell her story.

I owe my life to doctors, and I have been a patient to an extraordinary number. Some of my encounters have been excellent, others not. The doctors who gained my trust and my respect were those who first saw me as a person, and then as a patient. Trust is earned.
My doctor’s responsibility is to care for my needs. But, I have a responsibility to show care and respect for the them.
The Prof and I hope to give voice to the unheard experiences from a both a patient’s and a doctor’s perspective.

I studied medicine and subsequently specialised in psychiatry. I question how often I think about my patient’s experience of me? Do my patients ever share their experience, and if they try, do I really listen? How often have I asked my patients about their experience of me? And, how often have I shared appropriate parts of my own experience with them?
Alice and I hope that sharing our experiences might help others.
